How Much Does Duolingo Cost? Super, Max, Family 2026

Duolingo does not publish prices on its own pages, so the figures below come from the US App Store listing, Duolingo’s help center and investor call, and independent price reports. Prices vary by country, device and promotion, and Duolingo says it sometimes runs small tests, so treat them as ranges and check the price shown in your own app.
Duolingo is free to use, and Super costs about $96 to $120 a year (or $13 to $17 a month) for one person in the US. The Family plan, which covers six accounts, is about $120 to $144 a year. Max, the AI tier, was about $30 a month or $168 a year earlier in 2026, but it no longer appeared as a new subscription on at least one September 2026 account, and Duolingo’s CEO has said it may be discontinued. A cheaper ad-supported tier called Super Lite is being tested at about $36 a year.

The App Store’s in-app purchase list shows only ten items and does not say which price is monthly or annual, so matching price points to plans relies on the reviewer accounts and trackers listed under Sources. Older $84 and $96 annual prices still appear in that list, which is why the range starts lower than the latest reports.
What you get for free
Duolingo’s US App Store listing says every course is free. The free version shows ads and uses an Energy system: each lesson uses a little Energy, you start full, correct-answer streaks earn some back, and it recharges in about a day or when you watch a rewarded ad or spend gems, according to Duolingo’s own Energy blog post. Explain My Answer has also been free for every learner in the courses that support it since January 1, 2026, and the Practice Hub is free too, so you can keep learning without paying. What Super adds
Super removes ads and the Energy limit, and it includes a monthly Streak Repair. The cost is the main variable. On the September 2026 iOS account described by Language App Guide, one person was shown $16.99 a month or $119.99 a year, so annual billing saved about 41%. The App Store listing’s other price points, $12.99 and $95.99, match what independent trackers reported for the monthly and annual plans through mid-2026, with the annual price rising from $83.99 to $95.99 in June 2025.

The Family plan
Duolingo’s help center says the Family plan lets you share Super with five family members or friends, so six accounts in total. Each person keeps their own account and progress. The manager sends an invite link, and the person has to accept it. You cannot invite someone who already has an active paid Duolingo subscription, so they need to cancel and let it run out first. The help center shows steps for iOS, Android and the web.
Prices are the least certain part. One reviewer’s September 2026 account showed a regular price of $143.99 a year and a limited-time offer at $119.99, and older reports put the plan at $119.99. There is also a Max Family plan for mobile only, with up to five other members.
Duolingo Max: the tier that may go away
Max includes everything in Super plus two AI features, Roleplay and Video Call with Lily. Duolingo’s help center says it is available on iOS and Android and cannot be bought on the web. Price trackers reported about $29.99 a month or $167.99 a year earlier in 2026.
Two things changed in 2026. On Duolingo’s August 12 earnings call, CEO Luis von Ahn said, “we may actually sunset Max,” while describing options for bringing Video Call to Super subscribers. The reviewer account above also no longer listed Max as a new subscription. Duolingo has not announced an end date, so check whether Max is offered in your app before you plan around it. Does Duolingo have a free trial?
Yes, but the length depends on where you look. Duolingo’s website advertises a one-week trial, the US App Store listing advertises 14 days, and a September 2026 account showed a 7-day trial on annual plans. On the August call, von Ahn said Duolingo is shifting most of its free trials to one month, so the offer you see may be longer. Trials are usually set up through Apple or Google, so:
- Note the date the trial ends when you start it.
- Cancel at least 24 hours before it ends if you do not want to be charged, as Duolingo’s Super page advises.
- Check the price it converts to before you accept.
Why your price may differ
Duolingo’s help center says it occasionally runs small tests on its subscriptions, and its terms say it may change prices at any time. Prices also change with your country and currency, the store you buy through and promotions such as the 2026 back-to-school Family offer. In France, for example, the App Store lists Super Duolingo subscriptions at €94.99, €110.99 and €137.99. The only reliable number is the one shown in your own app before you confirm.
How to cancel Duolingo Super
Deleting the app or your account does not cancel the subscription. Access continues until the end of the period you paid for.
On the iOS or Android app
- Open the Duolingo app and tap the Super icon at the top of the home screen.
- Tap Settings, then “Manage subscription.”
- Select “Cancel subscription,” then confirm in the App Store or Google Play.
On the web
- Sign in, click your profile picture and choose Settings.
- Select Super Duolingo, then “Cancel subscription” and confirm.
Can you get a refund?
Duolingo’s help center says in-app purchase charges are generally nonrefundable, with no refunds or credits for partly used periods, although the law in your country may give you more rights. On iOS, refunds are handled by Apple. On Android, you contact Duolingo support and choose “Purchase Issue.” For a web subscription, you email support from your account.
